Projects are hard when you can only work on them one day a week.
After some trials and tribulations and this wonderful COVID issue ongoing my progress has been a lot slower than I would like. However we have a new fuel tank installed with fuel pump and sender. N
ew fuel and brake
lines going in next weekend and the seats are ready to go in. A few gremlins and some sorting out of electrical bits and then things should be more dandy.
Once she
is driveable I will bring her home from my dad’s and work on it at home which will improve my pace.
My only big issue right now is figuring out why she no longer boosts. At all. Thought it was a vacuum leak but a smoke test revealed no leaks. Could be the wastegate stuck open? I’m not sure yet. Any help Oppo?

Ugh, thanks for reminding me that I really need to work on ours.

Can you reach into the turbo and make sure it’s not seized? Could the catalytic converter be clogged? Does it have a turbo control valve if some sort? If so, could that be it?

Excellent! Someone to help me bounce ideas! So far we have spun the turbo impeller with no issues and no play, it’s only got 59K on it so I didn’t really think it’d be seized, and it WAS building a little boost a couple months ago. It has a wastegate actuator that apparently can be troublesome, so I’m leaning towards that being the issue but I’d like to be certain before I drop even more money into it from my rapidly dwindling fund. The converter is a good idea, and hard to tell without actually driving the car unfortunately.... it HAS been replaced “recently, ” as in it’s an aftermarket unit that was welded in at some point in the car’s history.

Thank you, it’s appreciated. Even if she is a bit of a turd right now with her mystery problems.

Haha, man I only get one day a week right now to work on her and it’s NOT enough. I need to get her home so I can get everything running.

I don’t know but it must be repaired at once. A turbo Buick must make boost. The universe demands it.

In my case, it’s having 3 other cars to worry about as well.
Well, okay, 2 technically at the moment but still.
Plus I have no mechanical skill. My grandfather does but he’s not in the best shape and can’t be out in the garage much anymore which blows (seriously fuck COPD) .

I agree! I’m throwing everything I’ve got at it, must keep the universe happy after all.

I’m a former marine electrician and a professional mechanic with access to two very well equipped shops, so I have no valid excuses other than the COVID panic preventing me from accessing the car more frequently lol.

If the turbos easy to get to test the wastegates actuation and visually inspect the compressor to make sure the turbo isn't dead

It’s right up top. We inspected the turbo when we got the car and it was in good shape, no issues and no play. The wastegate WAS working fine, but I suspect the diaphragm is blown out.

How hard is it to change the actuator?

I’ve never done one before but the turbo is right up top so I mean, how hard can it be, right? I’m a mechanic, I have the tools, it’ll be fine.
They’re not too expensive but I have to order it from the states (I’m in Canada) and it has to be an aftermarket one from Gbodyparts or Kirbans since even RockAuto doesn’t have the original.

The only other thing I have had fail other than a waste gate is a compressor bypass valve. That makes a fluttering noise when you let off the throttle so it’s pretty easy to diagnose. Does it have a boost control valve or boost control solenoid?

Solenoid actuated I do believe.

Might be another thing to check.
